Upgrade your Synology NAS to 2.5Gb networking for just $14

Last updated on November 18, 2024

I was thinking about going all out and upgrading my NAS to a 10G connection, but then I stumbled upon a suspiciously cheap 2.5G RTL8156B USB Ethernet Adapter on AliExpress. For $14? I figured, why not give it a shot?

Driver Installation

I followed the steps on the bb-qq GitHub repo for the DSM driver. The adapter uses the RTL8156B chipset, which this repo supports, and it worked without a hitch. No reboot necessary, which was a nice bonus!

Test Results

Here are the results from two iperf tests. The first is using the built-in gigabit port I’ve been relying on, and the second is from the new USB adapter.
